Frequently Asked Questions

  • I have questions about St. Andrew's. Who can I talk to?

We welcome questions! From Sunday morning services to weekday activities and Bible study, there is always something happening at this church. Email pastoral staff here.

  • What time are your services?

We have two services on Sunday mornings: 8:15 and 11:00. The 11:00 service is livestreamed on YouTube and Zoom. Links are available here.

  • What is the difference between the two Sunday services?

At our 8:15 service is smaller and more reflective.

Our choir sings at most of our 11:00 services, and guest musicians occasionally add their talents.

Both services are a mix of liturgy and music, including a sermon (Lessons in Living) delivered most Sundays by Rev. Jim Rigby. Other ministers on staff or guest speakers will also speak on occasion.

The main thing is, we are a safe space for every age, class, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, race and belief. As one of our weekly songs says, “Every way of compassion, every road of peace, every life-giving path is welcome here.” We hope you’ll give us a try.

  • Who can take communion?

All are welcome to participate in communion, both adults and children.

St. Andrew’s offers the sacrament of communion at both worship services on the second Sunday of each month (gluten free bread and grape juice). A candle lighting station is also available. Servers will provide the elements to anyone who desires but is unable to come to the front.

  • Do you have a nursery for young children?

Yes. Children four years old and younger are welcome in our nursery staffed with trained caregivers. The nursery is available from 8:15 until the end of the 11:00 service. We love the sounds of children in worship, so if you are more comfortable keeping your child in your arms or beside you, please do so. We also have a ‘cry room’ available that looks into the sanctuary.

  • May children remain in the sanctuary during the service?

Yes! Children are welcome to stay with caregivers throughout the service. You can find activity packets with coloring sheets and books in the back of the sanctuary . There is an optional children’s chapel during the 11:00 service that takes place during the sermon and involves circle time, short lessons centered around Bible stories, and playground time when the weather is nice. There is one chapel for children 18 months - 4 years and another chapel for children 5-11 years old.

  • Is there Sunday school for children and youth?

There will be no Sunday School or Youth Group until September 1st. Chapel will continue through June and pick back up in August. There will be no chapel in July.

During the school year, we offer a Sunday school for elementary aged children starting at 9:45 am and ending at 10:45 am. Our youth group meets on the first and third Sundays of the month in the evening beginning with dinner at 5:30pm and concluding at 7:45pm. Youth group is open to 6th grade and up.

Check out our pages for children and youth under the 'Growing' menu option.

  • Do you have classes for adults?

Every Sunday morning at 9:30 am, adults are invited to Jim Rigby's Sunday School Hour. This discussion-based class is held in the Sunrise Room with a remote option on Zoom. Additionally, two church elders lead a rotating Sunday School option known here as FreeThinkers. Click here for more information and for virtual links to these classes.

  • What's a visitor's experience like?

We are not a ‘formal’ church and you won’t be asked to stand up, greet your neighbor or participate in anything that would embarrass you. You can read more about what to expect here.

  • Is there a dress code?

St. Andrew’s reflects the Austin community, with a ‘business casual’ atmosphere during services. We are less formal than many churches and prefer to maintain an atmosphere that’s a welcoming home to all.

  • Is an offering collected?

While we do pass an offering  basket after the sermon, no one is pressured to give anything financially. We also recognize that there are a variety of ways to support the church though your time and talents.

  • Is the sanctuary accessible?

Yes. We have accessible parking spots with a ramp located near the front entrance and the side entrance. We have chairs, not pews, so it is easy to make room for wheelchairs and walkers. There are two gender-neutral, single-stall, accessible restrooms available near our Missions Entrance. Please ask an usher, a greeter, or staff for help.

  • What does this church believe?

We are Presbyterian, yet our first allegiance is to Christ’s gospel of universal love.

We are Christ centered, yet we respect and learn from all religions of love.

We affirm the ancient symbols of our faith, yet we strive to speak a new language that includes all people and affirms the scientific discoveries of our day.

We hope to teach children the stories of the Bible without sectarian dogma.

We strive to be a close, nurturing community, yet we welcome all people into our midst.

We wish to live in inner peace, yet hear God’s call to work for peace and for universal human rights.

We take faith seriously, yet believe the journey should be fun. We celebrate life in many artistic forms.
